BNS founding members are young and enthusiastic adopters of crypto currencies, all of whom graduated from IIT. Before they started BNS, they
have created multiple products that have helped consumers in commerce decision making.
In late 2017, we decided to start a crypto-currency exchange. To give people a smooth entry into the world of crypto, we gave importance to ease of use, security, and customer support right from the beginning. BNS went live on December 14, 2017.
In just a few months, our focus proved right.
Jakob Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics
I will be conducting the heuristic evaluation on the BNS website, using Jakob Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics. The objective is to identify usability issues and provide recommendations to enhance the user experience. By applying these heuristics, we can uncover areas for improvement and offer practical solutions for a more user-friendly website.
Severity Ratings provide a way to assess the impact and urgency of usability issues
- 0: No violations found
- 1: Cosmetic problems only: Fix issues if time permits.
- 2: Minor usability problems: Fix issues at medium priority.
- 3: Major usability problems: Fix issues with high priority.
- 4: Usability catastrophe: Needs to be fixed urgently.
These ratings help prioritize the resolution of issues based on their severity and potential impact on the user experience. Higher severity ratings indicate more critical problems that require immediate attention and resolution, while lower ratings can be addressed at medium or low priority.
Evaluation Findings
After evaluating the BNS website, we identified Four key usability issues that could impact user experience. Let’s dive into each of them
No guide or tutorial for new users.
A) No guide or tutorial for new users: A New user who is new to this platform and does not know how to trade is dumbed with information without a guide or tutorials which makes them feel lost and exit.
Heuristic violated: YES, Severity Rating: 4
Solution: Start with a question by asking ‘Are you experienced’ Then make users select an option like ‘beginner/intermediate/Expert’ and provide the guide accordingly. This simple addition will provide users with a sense of orientation and improve their overall experience.
The card slider is hard to recognize.
B) The card slider is hard to recognize: The website does not provide clear guidance for The card slider which makes the user skip the hidden cards without even sliding which leads to missing important features that may be the user searching for.
Heuristic violated: YES, Severity Rating: 3
Solution: There are many ways to solve this simple issue,
i) Make the cards auto-slide
ii) make the slider more attractive
iii) give the slider more space and make it visible
Dragging back through the cards switch back to the previous page.
C) Dragging back through the cards switch back to the previous page: I was using the site with a touchpad and looking through the cards and just dragged back two times and it made the site go to the previous page which made me frustrated and exit
Heuristic violated: YES, Severity Rating: 2
Solution: replace the slider with a button to drag.
The Logout button does not have any warning.
D) The Logout button does not have any warning: A User may accidentally click the logout button and immediately log out
Heuristic violated: YES, Severity Rating: 3
Solution: A log-out button should double-check whether the user has intentionally clicked or accidentally. this problem can be solved by a pop-up that shows an undo button and also auto log out if not clicked the undo button within 5 seconds.
Conclusion
By conducting a heuristic evaluation of the BNS website, we identified key usability issues and proposed solutions to enhance the user experience. These findings emphasize the importance of considering usability principles during the design and development process. Implementing the recommended solutions will not only improve the overall usability of the website but also lead to higher user satisfaction.
Lessons learned
Through this evaluation, we have learned the significance of applying UX heuristics to evaluate and improve website usability. It highlights the value of ongoing learning and continuous improvement in the field of design.
